The Awards

The Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards

The Award:
The Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards Program gives public recognition and financial rewards to elementary and secondary school teachers, principals and other education professionals who are furthering excellence in education. By honoring outstanding educators, the program strives to attract, retain and motivate talented people to the challenge and adventure of teaching. The program gives kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers, principals, counselors, librarians and other specialists an unrestricted individual Milken Educator Award of $25,000.

New Hampshire is fortunate to be participating in the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards Program. This program acknowledges educators who are models in their classrooms and in their communities, and provides positive examples for pupils and peers alike. The awardees serve as representatives of the many other excellent educators we have in this state.

The criteria for the selection of outstanding elementary and secondary school teachers, principals and other education professionals as Milken Educators include all of the following:

  • Exceptional educational talent as evidenced by effective instructional practices and student learning results in the classroom and school;
  • Exemplary educational accomplishments beyond the classroom that provide models of excellence for the profession;
  • Strong long-range potential for professional and policy leadership: and
  • Engaging and inspiring presence that motivates and impacts students, colleagues and the community.

New recipients are honored at the Leadership in Education Awards Ceremony. The banquet is attended by the recipients' families, local school administrators, community leaders, and the Commissioner of Education.

This banquet provides important opportunities for professional growth and policy engagement. New and veteran Milken Educators meet with other distinguished teachers, principals and stakeholders to share insights, expand their professional associations and advance their career development.

How to Apply:
Based on guidelines established by the Foundation, New Hampshire's Department of Education appoints a Blue Ribbon Committee that identifies candidates for evaluation and selection. Identification and selection procedures are confidential. The program does not include a nomination or application procedure.
